How long until antidepressants work?
Probably longer than you want, faster than you fear. Here’s the honest timeline.

The short answer
Most people start to notice some improvement in 2 to 4 weeks. Full effect usually shows up by 6 to 8 weeks. If you haven’t responded by 8 weeks at the right dose, that’s the signal to talk to your clinician about adjusting.
Week-by-week, what to expect
Days 1 to 7. You probably won’t notice the antidepressant effect yet. What you might notice: side effects. Mild nausea, headache, sleep changes (better or worse), and a bit of jitteriness in the first few days are common with SSRIs and SNRIs. These usually settle by the end of the first week. The early-side-effects-without-benefit phase is the toughest part of starting medication, and it’s the most common reason people quit too early.
Weeks 2 to 4. The first signs of benefit usually show up here, but they’re often not what you’d expect. You might notice you slept through the night for the first time in a while. You might find yourself doing something — making a meal, going for a walk — that you’d been putting off. Energy and interest tend to come back before mood does.
Weeks 4 to 6. By now most people who are going to respond to the medication are noticing meaningful change. Mood lifts. Anxiety eases. Things start to feel a little lighter.
Weeks 6 to 8. Full effect at the current dose. If you’re at a good place, great — we just keep going. If you’re partial, your clinician will likely talk about adjusting the dose, switching to a different medication, or adding something. None of this means you “failed” — it’s just biology.
What if it’s not working at all by week 6?
Don’t conclude antidepressants don’t work for you. About half of people respond to the first medication tried; among the other half, most respond to a second or third. The job is to figure out which one fits, and that takes time. Read about what happens when standard antidepressants haven’t worked →
